I returned to Bilo and resumed my previous position
from the military leave of absence. They did not have a position
at the store I was working at before so they gave a position as
assistant manager at a store about one hours dive in Edgefield,
SC. At first it was just getting into the rhythm of the new schedule.
It did not take long for me to realize there were some serious problems
in that store. One day I went into the storeroom and found the manager
just throwing stuff around. He was the type of man that kept everything
to himself and then would just explode. I always felt scared when
ever I was around him. The way we managed the store though it was
only a few hours a week that my schedule and his overlapped I worked
this way for about six months sometimes working 90 hours a week.
I would have to sleep in the store on nights that closed and then
had to reopen it in the morning. Because if I closed I would not
finish until midnight and opening the store required I be there
at 6am. One day I decided that it was too much and told the manger
that I was quitting. I left the store and went back to Greenwood.
I stopped at several places and applied for a job. One store said
that I was hired on the spot and to report for work Monday. By the
time I got home my mom said that the district manger had called
the house about 20 times looking for me. I was not home more than
10 minutes when he called again. I really did not want to talk with
him because I am not good at saying no. Anyway I talked with him
and explained to him the numerous hours and the stress I had with
the local management. He told me if I would come back he would make
sure that changed. I broke down and said I would. I went back but
the stress was more than ever. I felt so out of place even in the
town. If I went to lunch I felt that the people stared at me. It
was one of those small towns where everyone knows everyone and a
stranger is recognized and not wanted. The manger and the third
manger agreed to work more hours so I could just work 50 a week.
This caused stress in itself and resentment from them. This continued
about 3 months until I said good-bye forever to Bilo. I went around
Greenwood looking for work and found a job at a company that operated
amusement and gambling machines.
